The DATA Farm received 4.6 inches of rain over the past two weeks! Last Monday allowed a window for some field work to swap out the temporary RealmFive soil logging modules from UGA to the ones purchased for the project. Now, all soil and weather data are coming into the ABAC RealmFive account.
The soil temperature sensors in Front Field, South Pivot, and West Field were repositioned to a depth of 4 inches. This depth was chosen based on the UGA Cotton and Peanut Production Guides for monitoring soil temps to determine planting.
On Thursday 3/28 the corn planted in the North Pivot started to emerge! Figure 1 shows two seedlings on Monday. Figure 2 shows the corn on Wednesday 4/3 as it approves V2 growth stage. Next week, pending weather conditions, we plan to apply post emergence herbicides and the 1st side dress nitrogen.
The ABAC Beef Unit team is evaluating the ryegrass in Front Field and South Pivot to determine when to cut and bale it.
Now that spring operations are really in motion, we wanted to include some of the data collected for North Pivot so far. Table 1 shows the monthly costs for fuel, labor, and inputs, and Table 2 shows thes the fuel, labor, and input costs for operations performed so far.
To date, $7,596.55 has been spent on North Pivot. It comes out to $542.61 per acres. At yield goal of 250 bu./acre and an assumed corn price of $4 per bushel, the expected income is $1,000 per acre. This puts the per acres profit at $457.39, excluding future operations and cost. Expect more analysis like this in the future. Nick and the data team are working on spreadsheets and PivotTables to log and track this data. Note that some expenses, such as the labor rate, are estimated as we are not directly paying for these items.
Operations: 2nd herbicide application in North Pivot and 1st nitrogen side dress. Harvest ryegrass and terminate remaining cover crops.
Water needs: None currently due to the rain received.
Sensors: New RealmFive system in place monitoring soil and weather conditions.
